Farmer's Market HaulToday I took a short trip to the bi-weekly farmer’s market to check out what kind of fresh local produce I could find.  I’d never been to this particular market which sets up at Grady’s BBQ on Bandera Rd.  After talking a bit with the farmer who’s name is escaping me at the momentI decided to buy some black berries, tomatoes and a yummy seedless watermelon.

We’ll be having a couple of the tomatoes in our dinner tonight and I’ve already snacked on some of the black berries.  The total cost for this healthy haul was $9 and all of it went right into the farmers wooden cash drawer.  That was quite a good feeling to actually meet the farmer and put cash directly in his hand instead of a checker at Wal-mart or some other super store.   If you live in San Antonio on the northwest side around Marshall High School area I’d say when you get the chance.  It’s open from 9am - 2pm on Tuesday and Friday only.   If you don’t live in San Antonio visit this farmer’s market directory for locations all over the US.

Oh that is so the best way to go! We do have a farmer’s market in our area (here in Canada) and actually Ontario is famous for quite a lot of them I would say. Anyway we cannot wait till ours opens up (every Saturday) as that is where we will be spending every Saturday morning!

Of course we are interested in finding farmers also with organic produce and I am willing to pay whatever the price may be as I truly believe in the benefits of going organic. But bottom line like you say it is great to give them the money directly and enjoy local produce any day - it is so satisfying (literally :)

Evita: That’s awesome I bet your Saturday mornings are pretty fun. I’m hoping to go to a bigger farmers market soon and see what else I can find. You can really taste the difference between the farmers market fruits and veggies compared to the grocery stores. I love it.

I love the farmer’s market :) We go to one that is actually at the person’s farm…I can’t wait for more stuff to be in season - I agree there is a huge difference between grocery store & farmer market quality!

Funny, how you urban folk think that when the crunch comes, all you’ll have to do is come out in your SUVs and get even better stuff from the county bumpkins, but I’ve got news for you! Your gonna have to pull weeds and swat flys just like the rest of us!
