I know I’ve made quite a few changes. I’m always weary about where we are going and plan out multiple visits on a single trip. We opt to take the Prius or the new Civic over my girlfriends Grand Am with a V-6. We tend to stay in a lot more we’ve only really gone out to eat twice since I started this website.
I spend a lot of time doing research and writing for this blog as well as maintaining Chezlin.com for Rachel. I’m currently looking for more online type jobs where I can write for money about things I enjoy while I develop EcoInsomniac and Chezlin.com to their full potential. I guess that’s a change that happened because of gas prices I was sick of it and decided to find a way to make a living online. While I haven’t exactly found it this place gives me a great way to express myself and get the word out a little more.
Here is a semi-extreme measure one man took upon himself after getting a $700 gas bill. It’s amazing how much money going green can save you in the long run. We’re working hard on the house besides the cars and have so far taken our electric bill down to $110 a month for a 2800sqft house in South Texas with the A/C on. I’ll get into that one later though.
Enough about me though what kind of things have you done lower the financial impact of gas prices?

Nope. I was already taking sensible steps. I don’t drive to work I take the metro (and work from home some day every week). I use energy efficient light bulbs. When replacing my furnace several years ago I got a very high efficiency one. I planted trees so they shade the house from the sun during the summer…

John Hunter: Great John that’s a great way to save energy by adding a shade tree to keep the house cool on the sunny side. That’s great taking the bus in Austin we used it quite a bit. Thanks for sharing John I really appreciate hearing stories of people who having been living green before it was the cool thing to do.

Well there is not much I can do at this time as I have to travel 35km one way to work each day and there is no chance of carpooling. I am trying to relocate closer and big dream is also to work online…we’ll see how that develops over the next few months, years…
But I would not get a big, gas guzzling car ever, and whether gas prices are up or down I never drive around frivolously or idle the car.
Next car I buy though will definitely run on something alternative.

Evita: Yeah a lot of people are stuck right now with cars and trucks they wish they didn’t have. The working online thing will defiantly help with travel costs.

I take more pains to drive less, but besides that I’d already put a lot of energy-saving and gas-saving strategies into practice.
I recommend learning some hypermiling techniques. They don’t just save you money; they’re fun and challenging.
