I’ve never knew how powerful mushrooms were until this video by Paul Stamets at TED 2008. I mean I’ve heard they’ve found that some mushrooms or even some bacteria will eat away nuclear waste, but besides that these life forms can actually help reverse some of the damage we’ve done to the planet. They’ve actually got a lot more to do with life in the forest then we previously knew and with that knowledge I think regeneration can happen a lot faster and easier then before.

Mushrooms are really interesting. They are decomposers that absorb nutrients from organic wastes (saprotrophs).
They break down wastes into CO2, water and mineral components. If they did not perform this function, these nutrients would become lost.
Studies have shown that certain rain forest plants only grow when they are have mushrooms growing around them, despite having all the necessary nutrients artificially supplied.
Mushrooms and related plants are often the first to grow on arid land. They make the land fertile again.
Mushrooms play an important role in the Nitrogen cycle too. Useful little fellows.

They’re amazing I can’t wait for us to use them in the revival of some of our land. We’ve tried all the chemicals we put up barriers on hillsides that we stripped of grasses and trees. Nature has been trying to show us this natural erosion control and basically the forests best friend. Now that we’ve found out how important it is we should be able to put it to use.

Evita: I’m glad you enjoyed it Evita. I’ll be doing some experimenting soon with some of the mushrooms and things that he talks about. I just hope that we’ll be able to figure out how to help replenish some of the loss that we’ve had with old growth forests and what not.

I just saw the 11th Hour yesterday and Paul Stamets is in it. Not sure if you have seen this movie yet - it is fantastic! He discusses there also the possibilities of mushrooms.
