Earth Hour was started in Sydney, Australia by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) it only took 1 year for this great idea to be spread across the globe. This year on March 29th 2008 millions of people, businesses, governments and organizations all over the world will be shutting off their lights for 1 hour. Just 60 minutes is all it will take to make a difference. In 2007 when Sydney turned off its light for an hour it saw a reduction of over 10% of the average power usage. That’s equal to taking more then 40,000 cars off the road.
Major corporations and landmarks around the world have signed up and pledged to turn out the lights at 8pm in their timezone creating a rolling blackout of energy savings. The Sears Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Bank of America Plaza, and many sports stadiums across the country will go dark. It’s an amazing thing to see all these people, businesses and governments come together to support a cause and promote this action. I can’t wait to see the outcome and hear the stories from around the world. Not only is this an opportunity to save energy and do a good deed for the planet it is also a great way to spend quality time with your family, friends and neighbors. Make it fun, friend and make it a habit.
Even Google has joined in on Earth Hour and has gone dark for the day. I love this and will be participating. Will you?
