X-Prize Foundation and Progressive Insurance have teamed up to create a new program aptly named Progressive Automotive X Prize. The Progressive Automotive X Prize is a competition to create the next generation, super fuel efficient vehicle. It is open to teams all around the world who will compete to create a vehicle that gets the equivalent to 100mpg and meets the demands of the public as far as size, price, safety and performance while remaining environmentally clean. So far 60 teams from around the world have signed a letter of intent to compete for the $10,000,000 purse and publicity that comes with the competition.New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg had this to say at the announcement of the Progressive Automotive X Prize:
“The Progressive Automotive X PRIZE is an excellent example of how the private sector can spur solutions to our most complex challenges,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Here in New York City, we are also stepping up to the plate on energy conservation, by transforming our taxi fleet into hybrids and cutting the City’s energy use by 30% over the next ten years. It’s all part of PlaNYC, our plan to create a greener, greater New York.”
“Development of a super-efficient car would be a major step forward in the fight against global warming – and it would help us reach our goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in New York City by 30% by 2030. To maximize national and international awareness of the X PRIZE, I am pleased to announce that New York will be the starting point for the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE race next year.”
This isn’t X Prize’s first go around they’re best known for the Ansari X Prize private space flight competition it hosted for another $10,000,000 purse which was won in 2004 by the Sputnik 1 launched by Tier One. A list of entries is provided on the source link at the bottom of the post, but here are some names that stand out to me:
- Phoenix Motorcars
- Miles Electric Vehicles
- Cornell University
- Aptera Motors
- Tesla Motors
- Zap
This is going to be pretty exciting I’m sure all the teams are well equipped and the race to the prize will yield some pretty innovative designs and discoveries I’m sure. It’s great to see the private sector pick up and push innovation when others will not. For more information check out: http://www.progressiveautoxprize.org/ Source: BusinessWire
