 Denver’s new “Driving Change” program was created to make drivers aware that its not just what you drive its how you drive it.  Even if you drive a fuel efficient hybrid the way you drive it can have a direct effect on the environment.  “Driving Change” is a voluntary program started by the city of Denver and a couple corporate sponsors.  The way it works is you sign up for the pilot program on their website and then you take your vehicle to the nearest installation facility and in 30 minutes a couple measuring devices are installed that will monitor your driving.  I know a lot of you will be thinking about your privacy so here is their statement on privacy:

“The protection of personal privacy and collected data is of paramount importance to Driving Change and its sponsors. During the course of the Driving Change pilot, only the following events will be captured: time, speed, heading/direction, mileage, stops, starts, engine on, engine off, hard braking events, fast acceleration events, hard turn events, last reported location, fuel and device identification information.There is no mapping software involved. There is no serial tracking data that is captured by the device or stored on any computer system or server.For speed segment reporting only, the last reported location is maintained in a database, but only until another location is obtained. Once appropriate calculations are performed on that data, the location data is deleted.Only the scores associated with your driving behaviors and resulting greenhouse gas emissions are stored and maintained.”

I would sign up if I lived in Denver, but I actually don’t drive too much.  I hope this program is a success and other cities pick it up.  Awareness is key if you know how much you’re spewing into the air chances are you’ll care and this program will help bring awareness to willing drivers.  Besides awareness they give drivers reduction strategies to make slight changes in their driving patterns in order to cut down on the pollution their vehicle creates.
