San Antonio’s election season has come to an end and we’ve got ourselves a young new Mayor. It is my hope that Mayor Julian Castro will keep up the movement towards an eco-friendly San Antonio.

On that note I would like to send a BIG “Thank You” to our former Mayor Phil Hardberger.  I and I’m sure many other appreciate the hard work and thoughtfulness you put into your work as Mayor of San Antonio.  You and your council brought us many improvements that will benefit the environment and citizens of this city for a long time.  The money that was spent improving government buildings, improving and creating public parks was long overdue and will go a long way to clean up this city.

Mayor Castro I cannot wait to see what environmentally friendly initiatives you create and hope you follow up and continue to support those that were started by Mayor Hardberger.  Our city is becoming increasingly aware of the need to watch how we treat our environment and I’m sure that you will get the support you need to help our city clean itself up.

Wouldn’t it be cool if: Cigarette Edition

Fri, Feb 6, 2009

The USDA estimates that 360,000,000,000 cigarettes were consumed in the United States alone in 2007.  That is an absolutely staggering number to even think about. It actually comes out to just under 100 cigarettes per person per year.  Now there is absolutely no way to know how many of these cigarettes being consumed are ending up as litter, but estimates have been around 30%.  I hope that percentage is on the high end, but I’ve seen a whole lot of smokers flinging their butts to the floor.

Did you know?
Many people believe that the filter in the butt of a cigarette is made from cotton and are biodegradable.  Those people are wrong the filter material is actually made using a form of plastic called cellulose acetate and takes up to 10 years to degrade.

Cool Solution:
The coolest and only real solution would be to get everyone who smokes to quit, but that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. Anyway, since that isn’t happening we need ways to dispose of cigarettes and maybe even clean up those that do become litter faster.

Cool Ideas:
Cigarette manufacturers could embed small rings or strips of metal in the butt of each cigarette This would greatly increase the productivity of those who care enough to keep the ground clean by allowing magnetic pick up sticks or plates to be used instead of tongs or hands. This would also decrease how unsanitary it is to be picking up other peoples cigarette butts.

Cigarette manufacturers could find a way to use recycled and biodegradable filter materials in their cigarettes. This may not help those cigarettes that end up landing on pavement, but could have a better outcome for those that land in the grass or dirt. Would also be a good bonus to the recycling business which isn’t doing so well in the US at the moment.

I think permanent filters or mouth pieces could be an option. Smokers could buy the mouth piece and the “refill” smoke packs separately. This would mean after they’re done smoking there would be essentially no waste to throw on the ground or into the landfill.

Crazy Factoid:
In 2007, The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup picked up 1,971,551 cigarette/cigarette butts along coastal beaches world wide. Cigarettes, cigar tips and tobacco packaging accounted for 38% of all litter the volunteers picked up.

Those are just a few ideas that I think are worth looking at. I know they’re not the end all to the problem, but they could lessen the impact that the litter has on our planet. Do you have any ideas? We’d love to hear them.

Interesting finds of the weekend

As most of you know already I spend a lot of time on the computer mostly at night because of my lack of ability to sleep very well.  So, I end up finding lots of interesting things to read and watch on the internet.  I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve found with you.

The TimesOnline thought they’d “Reveal” how much a Google search impacts the environment.

Google responds with a well drawn out reply detailing the actual power usage and CO2 output.

I found that San Antonio’s Northside Independent School Disctrict offered a class called “Build or Remodel Green” and registered for it in a heart beat.

Mike Rowe gives a talk about Dirty Jobs and what he’s learned about working class Americans.  He also talks about how current culture belittles the working class and talks about his new PR campaign for work. If you have only 20 minutes and are gonna click on one of these links pick this one.

PLUG: I got the EcoInsomniac online store rockin’ and rollin’! We’re adding to it as we find new true eco-friendly items.

GM is building a huge lab for the study battery technology.  They will allow battery manufacturers to bring products and have GM test them for free of charge and they will receive a full report on GM’s findings.

The new 2010 Toyota Prius will be bigger, longer, strong and still get better gas mileage.  Too bad no PHEV just yet, but that’s still in the plans.

We’ve been compiling a list of recycling programs in some of the bigger cities around the country.  If you’ve got links to your cities recycling program that we don’t have listed please contact us.

I hope you enjoyed the smattering of links and I invite you to share some of your recently found green links with me either by comment below or on Twitter @EcoInsomniac and I will check them out and probably share them with others.  Hope you’re having a great New Year!

What’s new for EcoInsomniac in 2009

EcoInsomniac is going to go through some pretty awesome changes in 2009 and I hope everyone enjoys them.  We quietly launched our own online store that carries products for people and their pets.  You can check it out at http://shop.ecoinsomniac.com. We’re always adding new products and trying to find eco-friendly brands to offer.  I’m excited about it and hope it helps get true eco-friendly products in to homes.

We’re also going to try to do is offer more on going series of writing pieces.  This will hopefully allow stories to develop and get some reader participation going on.  The encouraging emails and IMs have been awesome and I’m so glad to have so many great people reading and participating here at EcoInsomniac.

We are looking for more writers to offer insight on green builder, recycling, upcycling, living off the grid and organic gardening.  We will grow this community into a thriving community filled with content and activity here in 2009.

If you have any suggestions or ideas please contact us and we will talk with you about it! You can also find EcoInsomniac on twitter!

Thank you all for 2008 and here is to an amazing 2009!
